If you’ve ever read one of my reviews of a vertical scrolling shooter, you’ll know that it’s one of my favorite types of action game, because I mention it just about every time. It should come as no shock then that I’ve been on a quest to find the best the iPhone has to offer. I think Air Attack may be it.
The visuals are hands down the best I’ve seen in a portable shooter, iPhone or otherwise. The 3D renders look great, the bosses are cool, and the backgrounds are stunning. The only thing I don’t recall seeing in the demo are weather effects, but hopefully that’s coming in the full version. The sound is good, though there seems to be a little bit of an issue where the sound effects fade out sometimes. The music is absolutely incredible and really pumps you up for the action you’re facing.
As for game play, the mechanics are pretty standard, but they are really well executed. The game does differ from most of its contemporaries in that you can drop bombs and blow most anything up, which is also how you earn money to buy upgrades. I also like the fact that you have to defeat structures in addition to aircraft (at one point your circle around and take on a small castle). You even chase down a train at one point, and this is all on the first mission! I can’t wait to see what the other missions hold.
Now there’s always the possibility that the rest of the missions in Air Attack are “just more of the same”, but I’m guessing that’s not going to be the case. I’ll definitely be bringing you a complete review once the full version is out, but in the mean time go check out the demo even if you’re not big on downloading lite versions of games. I know I’m glad I did.
